Liebe Wiener Critical Mass TeilnehmerInnen!!! – Forum nach der Jänner CM am 20.1.2012

Liebe Wiener Critical Mass TeilnehmerInnen!!!
Was macht die CM? Was sollte sie nicht machen? Was mach ich auf der CM? Wo hört die CM auf? Bin ich mit den Endpunkte Einverstanden? USW…..
RIDE ON

  1. Hallo

  4. Sorry for the English…

I am very new to CM and so my perspective is maybe somewhat ignorant and unqualified. I hope I do not upset anyone with my comments but if you ride a bike you guys are tough and used to handling abusive behavior.

I bike around Vienna to get from AnachB. I wish we had the kind of infrastructure detailed in this excellent Blog: http://hembrow.blogspot.com/ After being insulted, assaulted and the victim of attempted murder a few too many times I wanted to try and make cycling better and make it conceivable that my child could also bike around town. So I came on a couple or Critical Mass rides and had a great time enjoying the camaraderie and atmosphere. It is fantastic. I will for sure join other rides and help make up the numbers but I think there needs to be more to it than a support group for victims of bad traffic design.

I think the message that cycles are part of the traffic and that we need to be part of urban design is not going to be understood by the car drivers in a traffic jam caused by a bunch of smelly hippies who do not pay for roads and are just causing a provocative protest to piss of drivers. This part of CM is a lot of fun but it does not communicate and open peoples mind to support better urban design. I suspect it alienates people despite the great efforts of the Corkers and Police who manage the rides so well.

Fliers and banners are a good idea to maybe communicate but I am not sure what the CM message is. I know what I want but how do you communicate, CO2, Health, Lifestyle, Subjective and Actual safety issues in a attention grabbing simple way. This issue is also true in other countries and the best solution I have seen so far is the Hembrow Blog and the Go Dutch style campaigning.

Petrol prices, the CityBike scheme, Vienna Politics and C02 issues create an opportunity to really push for proper separate cycle infrastructure that makes travel and Vienna more safe and pleasant for everyone. It is possible and it is simple and there is a template country to copy. To make this happen stuff like CM needs to get kids and old people on bikes and to try and get people to imagine how street design can be done with relatively little cost.

Maybe this is stuff for the radlobby and CM should not get involved and remain a fun party, but I would think that CM should attempt at least to try and get consensus on the message and then try to communicate it.

As I said I am new to this so I am sure this is an old discussion but this is the perspective of a newbie CM non-rebel with a cause.

    All the best,

    Doug Culnane

  5. Doug,

Thanks for your impressions and opinion!

I don’t think it will be easy or even possible at all to get a consensus on the message of CM. This might be a weak point regarding communication with bystanders but at least for me it is an important (if not easy, yes!) part of a/our CM.

For example we won’t come to(?) a consensus to „push for proper separate cycle infrastructure“ (reminds me of an interview I picked up some years ago: „what are you riding for here at CM?“ – „for bike paths!“ – not my opinion at all).

Therefore it seems important to me to get this message to other people: We as CM are not a homogenous group with one clear message/demand.

    Best regards,
    S.

    (meine Meinung dazu)

  8. @ TomTurbo

    „Flyer dann hier online stellen“

Gute Idee!

  10. I am very happy to be moderated as i realize I am being provocative which is not too positive. However…

I really think CM needs a clear common message that people can relate to if it to be as effective in promoting bike culture as it deserves. Hippy flower bike above the head is a very cool feel good image for Hippies on bikes. Bike Packman is also cool for frustrated cyclists that would like to eat the cars they play games with each day. I like them both but you are preaching to the converted.

Simple slogan based marketing here: „No ridiculous car trips“:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVwtTM4cRe8&feature=player_embedded

It is debatable how successful this was as 1-2% increase per year is not very much compared to the 20% increase predicted with a proper cycle network (which is mentioned at the end of the film), but it is something that will gain general public support ( 80% apparently). This is much better than alienating them in my humble opinion.

We all know bikes are cool but how do we communicate to a frustrated person in a traffic jam that they are cool? I think flyers are a great idea because you make eye contact and person to person contact handing them out. This breaks a big barrier but lets put something on them that people can relate to.

„No ridiculous car trips“ is good because every day everyone else is making ridiculous car trips and creating traffic problems for the frustrated car driver in the traffic jam. Sooner or later they will realize that they also make a few ridicules car trips and that maybe bikes are an option not an enemy.

The message is more important than the medium. So what is the message?

  11. Thanks muhgeneral but it is not my flyer i am just linking to other people’s ideas that make sense to me. The flyer is licensed under the creative commons license so lets copy and remix it in a Wien mash up.

It would be great to localize this with local data and maybe change the focus. This is really aimed at Americans who have a different culture. I do not know what the main issues that people in Vienna/Austria will identify with because Ich bin an Auslander but I guess health, environment, quality of life, time, congestion…? are more important than obesity.

I also think that good solid local data is important but it would be really cool to mix that with creative feel good hippy graphical art as mentioned by trixy. Maybe even in the Hunderwasser style (my favorite local hippy), however I do not have the skills to do this.

If the result is good then I am sure we will have others like myself who will support hamza’s offer and cover the cost of printing it. The question is if the message is also something we can all support. I think so, and hope so.

  14. Having read about the last CM ride (which I missed) then maybe I understand that a high visibility jacket could give a corker some authority which may help with this task which does not sound too easy.

I think hi visibility jackets and safety clothing should be a personal choice. If someone feels that wearing it makes them feel more safe then you can not critisize them. However I think it is very sad that they feel the need to dress up and it is a symptom of bad cycle infrastructure design.

Hierarchiefrei heisst ned verantwortungslos. Corken, Zusammenbleiben, keine Autos reinlassen, Deeskalieren. Darum müssen wir uns alle kümmern. Friedlich, Kraftvoll, Lustvoll.

  16. Thanks peer that makes total sense to me. Lets put that on a flyer because to newbies and car drivers this is maybe not clear.

I still would like to see CM promote cycling as well as point out the reason CM have to resort to mass gatherings to assert their right to be traffic.

  17. Hallo,

    – fahrerInnen

    lieben gruß und bis dann,

    timon
    maracatu(at)novotoque(dot)at

    @Timon:

  19. I cannot and will not and dont want to forbid anybody to wear safety wests(?) (or helmets, or knee protectors). But I still can critisize. (for giving the impression that cycling was something very dangerous, thus also making it easier to make wearing various „safety“ equipment compulsory…). But IMO thats a little bit OT?

Macht einfach : )
Fuer Lastenraeder wende Dich z.B. ans Lastenradkollektiv.

    So irgendwie..

    Gute Jahresletzttage wuenscht
    f.
@Doug: You seem to understand written German quite well, is it ok for you to continue like this?

    SWITCH 2 A BIKE – IF POSSIBLE!

  24. IMHO (which is much better documented in its source the hembrow blog) you will not encourage car drivers to get on a bike if the infrastructure is crap. If the infrastructure is good like the documented infrastructure in the hembrow blog then more people will bike. However to get the infrastructure you need support for it firstly inside the cycle community (however this is obviously not possible as Sym points out) and then from the general public who will loose some parking and driving space and pay for street redesign and modification. Then you can think about a real mass with modal share over 30% being very realistic. The CM message is really a good one that should be communicated. The text so far does that well and removes a lot of the conflict that I think is only destructive but it does not really help the car driver imagine better road design and transport options. So they will not understand why it is needed and how good if can be for all road users. I have been thinking about how can this be done in the form of a leaflet to complement the CM message. However I get the impression that first this idea has to be sold the the cycle community first. Until then we are all pushing in different directions that will allow politicians to splash a bit of paint randomly and bask in the success of small modal share increases. In the mean time I still have to put up with conflict from aggressive and frustrated drivers, use crap infrastructure, and scare poor pedestrians so need CM as a form of therapy which is fine but can it be more? I will try to post some ideas and welcome criticism.

  26. The CM stuff I have seen on this site is very good but I think cyclists will relate and respond better to it than car drivers. I am interested in getting something that car drivers will be able to respect or at least tolerate.

„Join us or we will Join You“ is the threat that I hope gets car drivers to not look at cyclists as a nuisance but as a clever responsible mode of transport that should be allocated resources.

I plan to test this by asking car driving mates for feedback rather than cyclists but at this stage I welcome CM feedback and input.

    https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BysQkG7J4lVpYzI3MDc1OWUtMTE5OS00OTVmLWEyOTEtOTY0N2E2MDk1NDA1

I know it needs a lot of work:
    – graphics for data.
    – better more localized facts.
    – German translation.
    – Nice feel good layout and graphic design.

I would like some feedback to see if this is worth perusing further in a CM context. I look forward to the meeting after the next ride to learn more about CM.

    Thanks,

    Doug

  27. I really like your ideas! They are fact-based, not aggressive but powerful – just what we need. Although, I don’t get the first bit, what are you supposed to show with the table? In my opinion you should drop that.

What do you think about adding a photo like this: http://www.rad-spannerei.de/blog/wp-content/2008/01/stadt-muenster-platzvergleich-2001.jpg . Do you think we could recreate this in Vienna? We could also try to make a comparison on parking space as well. I think people get the idea faster when seeing a picture then reading through some facts!

  28. Thanks Hutfahrer,

The table is an attempt to get people to think about the different options they have for traveling in Vienna. The bike comes out well and gets the most smiley faces. Maybe this is a waste of space and we should concentrate on the message and the facts I do not know. I would like the car driver to feel they have to defend their decision and go searching to the usual stupid excuses. Maybe some will give the bike a go sometime.

The data should be better illustrated with bar graphs etc… Your picture is really good but hard to set up. Maybe we can reuse it? If we want to illustrate this lets do a CM ride in cars. 500 people with a bike on the roof rack of their car driving around the ring in circles. This should cause a huge traffic jam and will illustrate the real threat of Join Us or We will Join you. However it means spending an evening driving a car in a traffic Jam which is not fun. We would get a lot of support from the car drivers that would add to our mass… 😉

  29. I beg to differ! : )

The video you posted partly seems nice but there are many parts I dislike.
And I do not know about US/NYC but in Austria we still have the sucking obligated use of bike paths/lanes (Radwegbenutzungspflicht, I don’t really know how what it is called in English) which IMO also makes some difference regarding more „cycle infrastructure“.

    f.

  30. Hi Foo,

I wanted to post the video because it is a non Dutch version of infrastructure, that looks a bit like Dutch Infrastructure.

Austria needs the Radwegbenutzungspflicht because that is the only way they can get people to cycle on the crap infrastructure. Who actually would choose to ride in the allocated door zone of death? I would rather pay a fine and ride in the middle of the road rather than have this happen to me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v3Ne23CNLQ&NR=1

I am not an expert on road design but I would like to be a user of better road design that is more about people than cars. The safest roads in Europe (that also have many vulnerable road users) are in the Netherlands and that is the design blueprint to follow in my humble opinion. We do not need to agree on the technical details of better road design but what we do need to agree on is that better road design for cyclists is needed. If it is good we cyclists will want to use it and the Radwegbenutzungspflicht will not be an issue anymore.

I do not know the history of cycle campaigning in Austria but it seams that separate cycle paths are a bad thing to ask for in Austria because cyclists are afraid of the bad design they get in return, but i maybe mis understand this.

  31. OK sorry for being slow but this is now all starting to make sense.

    I found this:
    http://lobby.ig-fahrrad.org/forderungen/

Which looks a lot like this:
    http://www.ctc.org.uk/desktopdefault.aspx?tabid=5225

BUT what if the idea of „Safety in numbers“ is not that simple as disputed here:
    http://dfwptp.blogspot.com/2011/02/myths-about-safety-in-numbers.html

So if we look at the evidence here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safety_in_numbers
„Netherlands: Between 1980 and 2005, cycling increased by 45%, and cyclist fatalities decreased by 58%“

Then we ignore all the infrastructure and traffic policy work done which may have had an effect as well.

I am not a mathematician but I know the following:
    – I do not become a more patient car driver when there are more cars on the road I just crash at lower speed.
    – I do not enjoy being a mobile car traffic calming device on a bike.
    – I will not let my 11 year old son ride on the Vienna roads (even if he wanted to) because it feels too dangerous.
    – I do not care about statistics I do care about the aggressive conflict which leaves me feeling very vulnerable and unsafe.

So the idea of campaigning for the good old days of cycling (1960?) in traffic is totally pointless. (I would also point out that in the 1960’s everyone got in a car as soon as they could afford to and it was very dangerous for cyclists.) It is pointless because the masses (30%) will not cycle until it feels safe. If Safety in numbers is true it will not feel safe until by magic 30% start cycling in traffic, but there is no country that has managed this transformation and there is no (or at best questionable) evidence that it works. There seams to be a formula that works here: http://hembrow.blogspot.com/search/label/what%20works and it is getting support inside the newer international cycle community.

There is what seams to me to be intelligent design here:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlApbxLz6pA

There seams to be very bad in traffic design here:
    http://hembrow.blogspot.com/2011/08/magic-roundabout.html

which one do you think a parent will allow an 11 year old to cycle around alone?

So IMHO safety in numbers cycle campaigning in Vienna seams fundamentally designed to fail. In the mean time due to high petrol price, better infrastructure, city bike scheme, very low modal share or many other factors cycling is increasing in Vienna. I would guess the overriding factor is the infrastructure improvements. There is good evidence between infrastructure investment and modal share.

So where does this leave me? Personally I am a bit disappointed. I do not see the point of perusing cycle advocacy from 10 years ago that I feel will be very ineffective. I do not want to cause fights inside the cycle community because it then becomes less effective (however if is working against good cycle infrastructure that may be a good thing). I will take my opinions else where and try to lobby the lobby or something. If that does not work maybe I should do this: http://www.cycling-embassy.org.uk/mission

Thanks for you interest and dialog I do really appreciate this but I think I should maybe take my ranting elsewhere if it conflicts with the established current opinion.

    All the best,

    Doug
